David J. Halberstam - Author
David J. Halberstam, principal of Halby Group, has had a long career in sales and sales management. Halberstam spent 10 years at Westwood One where as EVP, Sports, he had responsibility for the company's rights to the NFL, the NHL, the NCAA Tournament, the Masters, and other prestigious events. He oversaw some $75 million in annual billing. To make his revenue numbers every year, he made new business the charge every day!
Earlier in his career, Halberstam served as corporate sales director for the Miami Heat, formed the Madison Square Garden Radio Network, and grew St. John's University's sponsorship support to more than $1 million annually in the 1980s.
He began his career at Katz Media, building its highly successful sports department. Katz is the country's largest national station representative with responsibility for selling national MLB, NFL, NHL, and NCAA packages.
Halberstam has written a dozen or so columns through the years on sales, sports broadcasting, and sports history for prestigious publications like USA Today, LA Times, Yahoo Sports, Bleacher Report, New York Daily News, Miami Herald, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and SportsBusiness Journal.
A noted basketball announcer, he served as a play-by-play voice of the Miami Heat of the NBA and St. John's University of the Big East.
As a sports broadcast historian, Halberstam authored Sports on New York Radio: A Play-by-Play History (McGraw-Hill), a publication noted by the New York Times. His new written text, The Fundamentals of Sports Media and Sponsorship Sales: Developing New Accounts, is a handbook on cultivating new sports media and sponsorship business.
