Jody H. Hironaka-Juteau - Author

Jody Hironaka-Juteau is professor of Recreation Administration and served as dean of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Fresno State. She has over 30 years experience as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) working with children, teens, and adults in hospital and community-based settings. She has practiced in the areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation, mental health, sensory impairment, and developmental disability.

She is recognized for her expertise and experience in the areas of diversity and inclusion training and collaboration. Under her leadership as dean, 6-year freshman and 2-year transfer graduation rates increased, and the achievement gap between underrepresented minority students and non-underrepresented minority students closed. She established the CHHS Honors Program in Collaborative Leadership, expanded the Advising and Career Development Center, launched the faculty mentoring program, and established the CHHS and Valley Children’s Health care Interprofessional Education Program designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

Over her six years as dean, she collaborated to raise over $5 million in private donations, and the college generated $85.1 million in grants and contracts ranking first across the university. She is an alumna of the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program, Harvard Management Development Program, Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Institute for Women in Higher Education, and Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics Leadership Development Program in Higher Education. Hironaka earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Change from Fielding Graduate University and a master’s degree in Education and a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration from Fresno State.
