Leo H. McAvoy - Author

Leo McAvoy recently retired from the University of Minnesota, where he enjoys emeritus status.

A member of the Academy of Leisure Sciences, he holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Loras College, a master's degree in recreation administration from San Francisco State University, and a PhD in education with an emphasis in recreation, park, and leisure studies from the University of Minnesota.

His research interests are focused on effective wilderness education, inclusive adventure programs, leisure and land management issues, and American Indians.

Among his many honors, McAvoy received the University of Illinois' Allen Sapora Research Award, Indiana University's Reynold Carlson Outdoor Education Achievement Award, the American Association for Leisure and Recreation's Julian Smith Award, and the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association's G.B. Fitzgerald Award.

In 2004, McAvoy name was added to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus "Scholars Walk," a prominent and permanent memorial to honor his receiving the National Recreation and Park Association's Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Research.
