Paul Gilbert - Author

Paul Gilbert has been in leadership roles in government, nonprofit, and private sectors. He has served on the governance boards of six organizations and helped found two statewide associations.

Gilbert is the executive director of NOVA Parks (Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority) a multi-jurisdictional park system with a combined operating and capital budget of approximately $30 million and seasonally up to 1,000 employees. From 2005 to 2014, NOVA Parks grew its enterprise revenues by 75%, also conserving significant new areas of parkland, and adding new facilities.

Gilbert is an adjunct professor at George Mason University, where he teaches Administration of Park, Health and Tourism Organizations. He is the author of many published articles, as well as an award-winning book on leadership titled, Lead Like a General. Gilbert has been a keynote, and session speaker at numerous state and national conferences.

From 2009 to 2014, Gilbert served on the board of regents for the NRPA Revenue Development and Management School at Oglebay. From 2010 to present, Gilbert has served on the board of Visit Fairfax (Fairfax County Convention and Visitors Corporation) and was chairman of that tourism marketing organization in 2014.

In the past, Gilbert was the chief executive officer of a regional land conservation nonprofit, and also formerly was engaged in corporate acquisitions, government contracting, and marketing. Gilbert’s diverse experience in public, private, and nonprofit sectors has contributed to his synthesized perspectives on what makes organizations in any sector succeed.
