Phyllis Ford - Author

Phyllis Ford earned a BS in recreation from the University of Massachusetts, an MA in education from Arizona State University, and a doctorate in recreation from Indiana University.

Ford’s long career in the field of parks and recreation included many years as chair of the Department of Recreation and Park Management at the University of Oregon.

She also served as chair of the Recreation Education Program at the University of Iowa; chair of the Department of Physical Education, Sport, and Leisure Studies at Washington State University; and chair of the Department of Recreation and Park Resources at Michigan State University.

A prolific writer, she has several books and many articles and papers to her credit and has held program, leadership, supervisory, and administrative positions in youth agencies, resident and day camps, and public schools.

Ford hiked and camped in the New England states, the Midwest, the Northwest, and Canada, including much of the Pacific Crest Scenic Trail, and multiple ascents of most of Oregon’s major peaks.

Her outdoor leadership experiences included Girl Scouts, climbing clubs, and high school and college courses.

She was an avid naturalist and taught environmental interpretation, outdoor education, and recreation and natural resources on the university level and served as a regional and national officer for the American Camping Association.

Ford passed away in 1999.
