Sarah J. Young - Author

Sarah J. Young, PhD, is professor emerita in the Department of Health & Wellness Design at Indiana University School of Public Health.,. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park Administration from Illinois State University and earned both her Ph. D. in Leisure Behavior with a minor in Law, and her Master of Science in Recreational Sport Administration from Indiana University.

She has professional experience administering and programming campus intramural sport programs and teaching legal aspects and HR management to students in public, non-profit, and community recreation.  Additionally, she is an adjunct Professor and Instructor of Sport Management, with Department of Health & Life Sciences at William Penn University.

Dr. Young officially retired from Indiana University in December 2021 after 35 years of service but continues to teach as an adjunct as she loves to learn and share that passion for learning with her students. Throughout her career Dr. Young remained professionally active making over 100 presentations at the state, regional and national levels, publishing over 80 articles, numerous book chapters, and co-authored three textbooks including Case Studies in Sport Law published by Human Kinetics and Mastering the Job Search Process published by Jones and Bartlett.

Her research interests are youth sport management, legal issues in recreation and sport, risk management, sport and health issues, and scholarship of teaching.  Dr. Young was co-PI on the Youth Enrichment Through Sport (YES) Africa project, an international exchange program using recreational sport to communicate healthy living messages to under-served boys and girls in Africa. The program conducted successful exchanges with Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Malawi and has had a multiplying effect on thousands of youth.
