Stephen A. Wolter - Author

Stephen A. Wolter leads one of the preeminent park and recreation study institutes in the world as executive director of the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands.

With hundreds of consulting and technical assistance reports, surveys, and training-development events produced since 1993, the institute works across the nation and world to improve park, recreation, and cultural resource experiences for the public while advancing the profession.

In addition, Wolter has been teaching in colleges and universities since 1980 when he joined the University of Minnesota, Duluth faculty.

Continuing teaching at Cal Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA, he joined the faculty in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies in 1997 at Indiana University, having taught over 21 different graduate and undergraduate courses, and he taught these courses over 70 times.

Wolter helps lead the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies online MS degree in Parks and Public Lands Management.

In his role with the department, he also leads the major programs in technical assistance, research, training and education, and planning for Indiana University’s Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands.

He has more than 35 years of experience in the training and education of the public, students, and professionals in the parks, recreation, and public lands field.

His parks management experience includes resource and visitor management, facilities management, urban and regional planning, recreation, sports, and tourism.

He has served as project manager in the development of master and strategic plans, needs assessments, and training development plans.

Wolter’s focus in teaching is leadership, philanthropy, planning, public policy, and information technology classes in his role as assistant professor at Indiana University, Bloomington.
