This book traces the evolution of leisure from its ancient, occidental beginnings in the city-state of Athens through the modern era (copyright 1988). Since our primary interest in writing was to examine how our concepts of leisure have evolved, this could be done only within the context of historical and philosophical change. The chapters, therefore, proceed more or less in chronological order.
