Leisure Education Contemporary Concepts and Activities
Leisure education plays a vital role in helping our participants realize the importance of recreation in their lives. It is not merely about teaching a participant to do an activity. It’s a process in which the participant learns how positive recreation can transform their lives. The leisure education manuals by Norma Stumbo and colleagues have long served as valued resources for therapeutic recreation education and practice. This rejuvenated version of the manuals aims to continue in this tradition, while bringing modern concepts, techniques, and activities to the forefront.
Leisure Education: Contemporary Concepts and Applications is organized into two sections. The first includes four concept chapters focused on addressing the core questions involved in developing a comprehensive leisure education (LE) program. The second includes five activity chapters focusing on the four areas from Stumbo and Peterson’s Leisure Education Content Model—Leisure Awareness, Decision Making, Social Skills, and Leisure Resources, along with a new category: Connection. This category recognizes the importance of participants finding personal connections to leisure content and to one another.
