Jay Shivers - Author

Dr. Jay S. Shivers has been engaged in the practice and study of the field of recreational service in all of its ramifications for more that 70 years. Along with his distinguished career as an educator and researcher, he has had professional experience as a program worker, supervisor, director, and administrator in public recreational service, treatment centers, private clubs, camps, and intramural director at the college level. He has been a visiting professor at six universities.

Dr. Shivers is professor emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology of the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut; a position he held for 45 years. He was the professor and coordinator of the professional preparatory program in recreational service education, with primary responsibility for therapeutic recreational service. He is the author of 29 major textbooks and numerous articles in refereed journals. Active in the field since 1947, he has keynoted international conferences and symposia in Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa.
